02/01/2005 -
Dickerson Percussion Ensemble performs at GMEA conference in
Savannah, GA
The Dickerson Middle School Percussion Ensemble had the honor of
participating in the 2005 GMEA conference. Unlike their
2004 participation, which were performances, this years the
group, directed by Mr. Scott Brown, Assistant Band Director at
Dickerson, led a clinic on "Developing a Successful Middle
School Percussion Ensemble." Mr. Brown was assisted by Mr.
Travis Downs from Tapp M.S. and Mr. Mike Lynch from Simpson M.S.
This was also a special treat for our own Mr. Back as his
daughter Katie was one of the 32 student members of the
ensemble.

08/01/2005 - Band Camp 2005 a huge success
The 2005 Walton High
School band camp ended on Saturday July 30th with the band
performing for the first time its 2005 show "The Gates" to
an audience of several hundred parents, family members and
local LaGrange residents. This year's show features the
music "With Heart and Voice" which our Symphonic I band
performed last year during concert season. The hard
work put in during the week by the students was evident on
Saturday as they marched the entire first movement and
performed (in concert formation) Movement II. The
Walton Percussion section also presented the "drum feature"
also known as Movement III and a new street beat entitled Flausen. This is the first time in over 15 years
that the band will enter the stadium to a new cadence, which
has been composed by our own Tim Church. Don't worry -
- the new cadence still features the R-A-I-D-E-R-S spell out.
All of the
Chaperones and Staff were very proud of the students during
band camp. Their attitude and dedication was awesome
during the entire week. In addition they exhibited
superb flexibility as the weeks schedule was impacted by the
weather. To top it off, there was great
participation in the "mandatory fun" activities such as the
Ice Cream Social and Karaoke night(s). There is a
rumor that the Karaoke Lounge may make an appearance at
Rock-A-Thon.
Congratulations to
all that were integral in contributing to the success of
this years camp. Your efforts are greatly appreciated
by this years directors Jim/Carol Childs and Ken/Kathy Stamm.

11/01/2005 - Students
treated to visit by World War II veteran
Students were honored on
Thursday, October 27, to welcome Pearl Harbor
survivor, Mr. Durward
Swanson, from Pine Mountain, Georgia. Mr.
Swanson graciously shared his memories of the first
few moments
as he was awakened on December 7, 1941 - a date
which will live in infamy. He brought to life some
of the men who gave their lives at Pearl Harbor, and
helped the students see through the eyes of someone
who was there, the response of our country to the
events of that day and of the actions that took
place in the weeks and months following. He
described the location where he was stationed and
what the students can expect to see when they visit
Pearl Harbor in
November. Mr. Swanson's warmth, humor and
pride in the United States was evident throughout
his talk. He answered questions from the group and
afterwards, he spoke with them individually and
shared more details regarding his personal
experiences.
Mr. Swanson's stories will enrich the student's own
visit to Pearl Harbor as they see the places of
which he spoke.
Mr. Swanson took his recruit training
under General Patton. He served in the Army Air Corp and was
stationed in Honolulu from 1939-1944 at Hickham Field. He is
one of the 83 Georgia survivors and the 5000 left in
the U.S.
